Sinulog 2010 fest to feature all Cebuano music and dances

CEBU CITY, July 14 -– Organizers of the Sinulog 2010 grand parade said they will feature Cebuano music and dances throughout the festival which celebrate its 30th anniversary in January 2010.

Ricky Ballesteros, Sinulog Foundation Inc.’s (SFI) executive director, said they will focus on the Sinulog based dances and will feature Cebuano music and dances to educate both local and foreign tourists in the origin of the festival.

Ballesteros said the Sinulog’s theme will remain the same: “One Beat, One Dance, One Vision.”

But he said Sinulog 2010 will feature an all-Cebuano performance from dancers to musicians and other artists and will show the best that Cebu has to offer.

”Since this is a grander celebration, we want to go back to the roots of the Sinulog, to educate the Cebuanos, especially the youth, on how the festival started. We want to show what Cebu was and has become through the years. Everything will be about Cebu and its culture,’ he said.

Ballesteros said some locals don’t know that Cebuano dances exist, that is why the SFI will present them during the grand parade.

From the launching parade in early January to the finale of the grand parade on the third Sunday of the month, Sinulog-based performances will highlight all the programs and nightly concerts.

Although the focus is on Sinulog-based dances, the competition during the grand parade will still have the free interpretation category.

While the Sinulog-based dance can seem monotonous and plain to some spectators, Ballesteros said a lot can be done to make the performances extraordinary.

Starting this September, the organizers will hold dance workshops for all choreographers and Sinulog dances to guide them to explore and innovate to make their performances spectacular.

”We want to encourage them to research on the Sinulog evolution. There is a lot to explore. We have to go back to its roots so we can emphasize that this is the Sinulog. Since this is a bigger celebration, it’s time to showcase the bet of Cebu,” Ballesteros added.

SFI has started sending invitations to out-of-town contingents to ensure their participation in Sinulog 2010.

Since next year is an election year, Ballesteros said they expect more politicians to attend the festival.

He said they also expect more revelers spectators and foreign guests since Cebu will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the “biggest festival in the country.” (PNA) FFC/EB/ad

Famous Cebu talents to highlight Sinulog 2010

CEBU, Philippines - Local talents who made their names known internationally will be invited to perform for the grand finale of Sinulog 2010, this according to Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña.

These local talents include singers Pilita Corales and Dulce, among others, who will render songs with the accompaniment of the Philharmonic Orchestra.

Osmeña will lead the Sinulog festivities next month after he failed to attend the festival last year after being diagnosed with urinary bladder cancer.

He was in the US during the Sinulog celebration for chemotherapy sessions. He eventually underwent a successful operation months later.

Osmeña said that the city will spend P2.5 million for the grand finale alone and another P10 million for the prizes of the grand parade.

“All-Cebuano kuno ilang kuhaon for the grand finale, I said ‘that’s fine’, the city will spend for the production,” Osmeña said.

It was learned that the city government only donated P10 million for the Sinulog festivities last year including the grand finale.

Sinulog executive director Ricky Ballesteros revealed that around 500 performers will entertain the crowd during the grand finale of Sinulog 2010.

Ballesteros said that singer Dandin Ranillo, the brother of Matt Ranillo III and the uncle of Krista Ranillo was also invited to perform.

Dandin is the one who sang the theme song of the Sinulog festival entitled Sinulog isyagit og kusog.

Meanwhile, Ballesteros said a number of out-of-town contingents have already confirmed their participation in the Sinulog 2010 grand parade.

These are Santa Catalina of Negros Oriental, San Carlos City of Negros Occidental, Placer of Masbate and Masbate City, Tangub City and Camiguin, among others.

The Sinulog executive director said that there are also first-timers who confirmed to participate in the coming Sinulog festival, these are Larena in Siquijor, Zamboanga City and Davao City.

Ballesteros is expecting a more colorful and dramatic presentation from different contingents in next month’s Sinulog festival.

“Kay we encourage the choreographers to innovate, make some research of their concepts and improve their musicality and production,” Ballesteros said.

Ballesteros disclosed that the launching of the Sinulog 2010 activities is scheduled on January 8, a day before the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Lalawigan will be held.

On January 10, the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Dakbayan will take place.

The 20 winning contingents of the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Dakbayan and Lalawigan will automatically be included in the Sinulog 2010 grand parade on January 17.

Ballesteros said that major prizes at stake for the festival will be P500,000 for the champion, P300,000 for the first runner-up and P200,000 for second runner-up, both for the Sinulog-based and free interpretation category. – Elly Bolonos/BRP (FREEMAN NEWS)

The Cebu Sinulog Festival 2010 is officially open! Earlier today, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña welcomed thousands of cheering crowd at the Abellana Sports Complex during the official opening ceremony. Also in attendance is Cebu City Vice May and Sinulog Foundation chair Michael Rama.

This year Cebuanos are making all the extra effort to celebrate the Sinulog 201o more meaningful, more colorful, and more grandiose as 2010 marks the 30th year of Sinulog Festival.

The opening ceremonies started with a novena mass at around 2PM at the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino, which was then followed by a short streetdance performed by 15 schools from around Cebu City. Unlike the traditional sinulog Streetdance Parade, the sparade this afternoon, used a taped music featuring the Sinulog beat.

More and more activities are now lined up leading to the grand highlight of the festival slated on January 17, 2010.

Tomorrow, students from various towns of Cebu province will be competing at the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Lalawigan, where the top 5 winners will be eligible to join the highlights on the final day of the fiesta.

Sinulog 2010 Festival

Every time that I get to know that Sinulog Festival will once again set in motion this January 2010, I can’t help but feel proud and pride not just only for myself precisely but to all of us Cebuanos. This annual event is very much special and it truly signifies a lot to us all. This is probably the grandest event and essential icon of Cebu’s History. Sr. Santo Nino is the best!

Sinulog is a Graceful Dance with the beats but it’s not only focusing into that. It is also a season of Thanksgiving to us all and Glorifying to the miraculous child of Jesus. These things such called fantastic and Colorful Spirits served as like no other.

For all these years of honoring and dedicating into our hearts to Santo Nino our miraculous child of Jesus, it really shows our strong and never-ending faith to him. No wonder that all Cebuanos are still having that optimistic personality and bearing with them the unending smiles despite of everything. Knowing in the fact, that if it were not by Santo Nino this Cebu and all of us would not exist.

Let us once again leads the Festival into the Spotlight. Let the One BEAT, One DANCE and One Vision set in MOTION. Viva Pit Senyor to us all!
